When the sample is too small to be handled and prepared correctly, it should be embedded in a resin, the characteristics of which are chosen according to the material and the analysis to be carried out. The resin protects the edges of the sample during the polishing phase, making it easier to see the coating or heat treatment layers under microscopic examination. In addition, the coated sample is easier for the user to hold and can be inserted into the sample holder of an automatic polishing machine. There are two main categories of mounting resins:

  • Hot mounting resins require the use of a heated mounting press for their shaping. They come in the form of small granules that are fused and shaped with the sample inside the press moulding chamber. The moulding temperature varies between 150 and 180 degrees.
  • Cold mounting resins are poured directly into a mounting mould with the sample and do not require the use of a machine. They are available in two components: powder/liquid or two-component liquids, which harden when brought into contact.
